Yes, every installation requires a 10mm air gap between your retaining wall (or house) and the decking structure. Although composite, a decking and its subframe should have air flow and be able to expand and contract. This ensures that the structure as a whole can adapt to climate fluctuations throughout the year without putting strain on the joints, clips and decking.
Joists act as the base support for your decking boards and should be spaced evenly, usually at 400mm centres. Adding blocking between joists increases strength and stability while also reducing the risk of twisting or warping. It is recommended to add extra joists to areas where two boards will meet (end-to-end) for extra strength.
While under construction, regularly check that the frame is level and square. A slightly uneven frame will cause significant issues when laying decking boards – either now or in future.
As a low-maintenance product, composite decking only needs periodic cleaning with simple household products. Diluted washing up liquid (or patio cleaner) and light hosepipe spraying should easily remove any marks or debris from your decking.
If you do spill food or drink onto your decking, we recommend a quick wipe and rinse to help ensure no long-term staining.
Never use abrasive pads, scrubbing brushes or harsh chemicals on the decking as it can damage the surface.
We do not recommend using a high pressure washer. Although not advised, if you do use a power pressure washer, only use with a ‘wide-fan-angle spray’ at low pressure. Powerful jets of water can damage the decking and cause splits or cracking to occur. Once the deck has been split, water can freeze in these cracks, causing further damage on expansion.
No, one of the main advantages of composite decking is that unlike timber, it does not need regular sanding, priming or staining. It is coloured during the manufacturing process and coated or wrapped to ensure its longevity.
